CITA RSS Aggregator version 1.6
Version 1.6 provided the following improvements over version 1.5:
- The Aggregator now supports downloading of RSS enclosures - also known as Podcasts. The term Podcast originated because the first types of enclosures were mostly music files that could be loaded onto iPods. There are, however, many types of file that can be served as enclosures and 'Podcast' has become a general term to cover them all. By default, the Aggregator simply shows the presence of enclosures on channel summaries and provides a link to them on the feed server. If you activate the download facility via the Aggregator options screen you will see additional features including:
- The ability to download enclosures to your PC automatically, manually or semi-manually.
- New alert screens that inform you that a new download is available and that provide options to open, move or copy downloaded files.
- An entirely new download summary screen that describes all currently available enclosures and their download status. The screen also shows progress information if a download is in progress.
- An option to open downloaded enclosures directly from channel summaries.
- Additional support for automatically downloading files described by 'BitTorrent' enclosures.
- Updated icons and options for enclosure items shown in the 'News' tree view at the left of the main screen.
- An updated staus display at the foot of the main screen.
- New options to change download and download alert settings.
- The Aggregator uses special 'header tags' when retrieving feed data that allow it to quickly recognise when the feed data has not changed since the last request. This method reduces overhead for the feed server, your PC and your network connection.
- When showing channel summaries, the Aggregator now shows more information about when the feed was last updated locally and at the server.
- If the Aggregator encounters an item without a link to a web page, choosing an option to show a linked page is automatically interpreted as a request to show the summary for the item's channel.
- Most channels that provide items containing enclosures (podcasts) link the items to a copy of the enclosure on the feed server. To prevent you downloading enclosures inadvertently, the Aggregator automatically removes the item link in this situation.
- The Aggregator now recognises when the main screen is maximised when remembering its size and position. If, when you close the main screen, it is maximised it will be maximised the next time you display it.
- Both the Aggregator and the Builder send details of unexpected errors to an error log that you can send to us so we can analyse it.
- We fixed a bug that meant the weather panel on the main screen did not use the font settings you specified. The screen also now displays correctly if you choose to use an external browser.
