CITA RSS Aggregator version 2.0
Version 2.0 provides the following improvements over version 1.9:
- The Aggregator now includes a tool that allows you to remove adverts from RSS feed items. We have provided this facility to allow you to remove persistent and aggravating adverts.
- The main window tool bar includes a new 'Create a web link' button. This creates a link on your desktop pointing to the page you are displaying in the Aggregator. This gives you a useful way to remember a page that you want to go back to later on.
- If you use Windows XP, you will see the new XP style for buttons, trees, check boxes, radio buttons, tabs and so on. We have also made some improvements to the look of the Aggregator screens that you will see even if you are not an XP user.
- If you have selected a sound to play when displaying an alert (available as an option in the alert settings panel of the settings window), and the Aggregator has several alerts to show you, the sound plays for just the first alert. That prevents the sound from repeating unnecessarily.
- Previously, if you clicked menu option 'Stop alerts for now' in the Aggregator's main window, the Aggregator suspended alert messages until you clicked 'Resume alerts' or you restarted the Aggregator. Now the Aggregator remembers the setting even if you restart the Aggregator. This helps people that use the Aggregator on an ad-hoc basis. You can also disable alerts via a linked 'Disable all alerts' option at the top of the 'Alert settings' panel of the settings window.
- If you right click a channel in the tree view shown at the left of the main Aggregator window, you will see a new 'Show all items' option. This shows all available items in the channel summary regardless of their status. That's a useful way to go back to items being tracked or ignored - especially for feeds that display full text in the feed.
- The Aggregator now shows you source and author information from feeds that provide it.
- Previously, clicking the 'Text size' button in the main window toolbar did nothing. Instead you clicked the drop down next to the button to choose the text size you wanted. In this new version, clicking the 'Text size' button cycles through the available text sizes.
- The Aggregator, by default, sets itself up to run automatically whenever you restart your PC. The new version includes an option to disable and enable this facility. You can find it in the 'General settings' panel of the settings window.
- If the Aggregator encounters a problem while downloading an enclosure (podcast) and the download window is open, the download window refreshes automatically so you can see the problem.
- The Aggregator is more resilient if it encounters a problem moving or copying a download. It now displays a message describing the problem instead of crashing.
- We have improved handling of feeds that omit titles or descriptions from items.
- We have improved the display of tooltip text if you hover over an item in the tree shown in the main window, and the description has embedded ANSI characters or line breaks.
- We have improved the way the Aggregator detects that you have displayed an item when you have requested the Aggregator automatically mark items for tracking when you display them.
- We have modified the Aggregator so it no longer uses a feature of the .net framework (Microsoft software used by the Aggregator) that caused the Aggregator to crash if non-.net programs created conflicts with the way .net expected them to use the Internet.
- We have corrected a problem that caused the Aggregator to crash if your operating system was set to display commas in numbers to indicate decimals.
