CITA RSS Aggregator version 1.7
Version 1.7 provided the following improvements over version 1.6:
- When browsing web pages using the Aggregator, you now see a page heading telling you if the Aggregator has found a pointer to an RSS feed from the page. You can click the heading to add the feed automatically to the Aggregator. If the Aggregator sees pointers to multiple RSS feeds, you get to choose which feed(s) you want to add to the Aggregator.
- The Aggregator now supports compressed feed pages. It tells feed servers it can support both 'gzip' and 'deflate' compression methods. Servers that support compression can then send feed data in compressed form. This significantly reduces the data transfer overhead for you and the feed supplier. In the unlikely event that this causes a problem when reading a feed, you get a new option to disable compression for that feed.
- If you leave your PC unattended for a while, the Aggregator detects the PC is inactive and automatically stops looking for feed updates. This approach has several benefits:
- You do not need to see alerts while you are not there
- Waiting until you are back before looking for updates means you get to see the latest news
- You will reduce the load on the feed servers.
- We have recreated the tray icon for the Aggregator so it is easier to read. A new version of the icon tells you if it has temporarily stopped looking for feed updates.
- The Aggregator now looks for requests from feed suppliers to implement minimum update intervals. The Aggregator will not look for feed updates more frequently than the requested interval. In practice, few feed suppliers provide this information and those that do often specify a one-hour interval which is the minimum interval allowed by the Aggregator anyway. The Channel settings panel shows any request found by the Aggregator.
- You can now specify the update interval for a channel in minutes (previously you could choose only hours, days or weeks). The minimum update interval remains one hour.
- When closing the Aggregator's main screen, the message asking you if you want to mark all unread new items to be ignored now gives you the option to cancel the close request.
