Changes made in version 3.0 of the CAB Local Information system
Version 3.0 incorporates the following changes:
- We introduced the intranet version for the first time. You can now access local information through a web browser.
- We have changed the recommended database access software from the obsolete Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) to Microsoft Data Access Engine (MDAE). The system will, however, continue to use MDAC if it can't find MDAE. It's possible you already have MDAE installed since it comes with Office 2010 and associated products. If not, installing MDAE will give you a performance improvement (especially if you use a 64-bit version of Windows). To find out if you have MDAE already, install the new version and double-click the version number; if you see "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" you have it. The Installation Guide tells you how to get a copy if not.
- The enquiry program includes the following enhancements:
- When showing the results of a search, the database id is now an active link. Clicking the link shows the item on its own in a search page. You might find that useful if you want to print just the one item, for example.
- You can double click the version number shown at the bottom of the search pane to see diagnostic information.
- If you use a Windows log on id across several PCs, it's possible for the system to 'remember' a screen size and position that exceeds the bounds of the display you are using. The program now ensures the display shown at start up fits within the bounds of your display.
- When you perform an alphabetic lookup or click a soft button that starts a search, the results are sorted according to the sequence requested in the toolbar.
- We have fixed a bug that generated incorrect link addresses for weblinks that start 'https'.
- The maintenance program includes the following enhancements:
- When creating web and document links, the program will create a default sequence number for you. The number generated is 10 more than the previous highest number. You can, however, change the generated number to re-order the links.
- If you enter HTML in the item text, the program performs some checks on your entry. The new version improves the checks and provides more useful diagnostic information to help you identify the cause of the problem.
- A new 'Index' button searches item text and suggests a list of words that have not been indexed already. You can tick any words to add them to the alternate index entries without having to rekey them.
- Right clicking the item text box shows a new context menu:
- The usual Cut, Copy, Paste and Undo functions
- 'Index all the text' does the same as the new 'Index' button
- 'Index selected text' looks for search words in the text you have highlighted
- 'Index selected phrase' adds the entire phrase you have selected as an alternate index entry
- We have improved the way link checking is done to reduce the number of reported problem links that turn out to be OK when you use them
- Link checking now prevents power management from shutting the PC down. Link checking will not be interrupted if your PC is set to go to standby after a period of inactivity, for example.
- We have also changed references in the installation programs to "MSN" to "Bing" (it's the same thing).
